This series is inspired by the re-appropriation and re-contextualization of the square which "modernist" Josef Albers appropriated from Mesoamerican Culture. Through the act of re-appropriation, the ritual of undoing, and creating new meanings, the process of healing of such violent acts of extraction could begin. While also empowering brown people through the citation of extraordinary feats and its diminished visibility throughout art history but also human existence.
The Piramide del Sol of Teotihuacan shows the advanced technology already used by indigenous cultures prior to Spanish invasion. Thru my use of technology to produce this work I want to continue with accessible technologies as a way to reflect that advancement. Through the use of "holographic" or color shifting materials, for me, also reflects a constant fluidity that my practice generally encompasses.
